The name translates to “scarred woman,\" and the tale is considered a Wabanaki variant of the Cinderella story. According to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.native-languages.org\/oochigeas.htm\" target=\"_blank\"\u003enative-languages.org:\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Oochigeas is the heroine of a 19th-century Mi'kmaq and Maliseet fairy tale which is a fusion between the French 'Cinderella' story and Wabanaki folktales.
