Pelleted seeds. An insanely stunning variety for the cutting garden. We cannot get enough of that apricot-peach-salmon ombré hue, completely unmatched in design. While most foxgloves are biennials, 'Dalmatian Peach' blooms in the first year, making it an excellent choice for cut flower growers.
I've always said that the fairies on the farm make their homes in the foxglove florets. It turns out that foxglove has been associated with fairies, witchcraft, and the supernatural for centuries. Sometimes, we don't need books (or the internet) to tell us what we already know😉, but it's admittedly fun researching plant friends!
Foxglove is poisonous and must be grown with caution, BUT:
While foxglove is considered toxic, there's more to the story, as is the case with many plants. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that foxglove has been used medicinally since at least the 16th century. You might be even more surprised to learn that it's still being used for heart conditions in modern medicine today!
William Withering, the British physician and botanist credited with bringing foxglove’s medicinal properties to scientific attention, is often considered the founder of cardiology for his work with digitalis, the active compound found in foxglove (latin name: Digitalis purpurea). Today, digitalis is still used in modern medicine in the form of digoxin, a drug used to manage heart arrhythmias and congestive heart failure.
CAUTION: All parts of this plant are poisonous, including the seeds. Use caution around children and pets. The purchaser assumes all liability relating to the use of this product.
Packet contains approximately 50 seeds.
DETAILS
Plant type: Annual/Tender perennial (Zones 4–8)
Days to maturity: 120–135 days
Light preference: Sun/Part shade
Plant spacing: 9–12 inches
Plant height: 24–36 inches
Hybrid status: F1 Hybrid
SOWING
Depth: Surface sow (light required for germination)
Days to germination: 14–21 days at 65–70°F
Sow indoors 10–12 weeks before transplanting out. Surface sow as light is required for germination, but a fine dusting of vermiculite helps with moisture. Pinching not necessary.
Harvest when 2 to 3 flowers or up to 1/3 are open. Better to cut early before bees pollinate.
Expected vase life: 7 to 9 days.
Please note that hybrid varieties are produced by traditional breeding methods of two distinct OP (open-pollinated) varieties within the same species. This is done for improved qualities, but saved seeds will not produce true to seed. While I tend to prefer most OP varieties, there are some exceptions in which a hybrid is a real winner (like my favorite cherry tomato, Sungold).
It's important to note that this is entirely different from genetic modification. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have DNA (sometimes from non-plant organisms) inserted into their genome via genetic engineering techniques.
We do not sell GMO seeds.
From Johnny's: F1 Hybrid seeds are the result of a cross between two genetically distinct parent plant lines. The plants grown from these seeds will usually show more vigor than either of the two parent plants, and often more vigor and uniformity than similar non-hybrid (standard) varieties. To create a hybrid (F1), traditional breeding methods are used that involve the cross-pollination of two parent varieties that were selected for specific traits.
