Exceptionally rare and limited peony whose name is rooted in Native American legend. To my knowledge, it isn’t available individually anywhere else (though I’ve seen it listed for well over $100+ per root in the past!).
Blooms in stunning salmon and dusty-rose hues (seen here) that shift into dusky peach and smoky raspberry tones (which a quick Google search will reveal). To me, she feels like the 'La Belle Epoque' of the peony world.
Oochigeas comes from a Native American legend. The name translates to “scarred woman," and the tale is considered a Wabanaki variant of the Cinderella story. According to native-languages.org:
"Oochigeas is the heroine of a 19th-century Mi'kmaq and Maliseet fairy tale which is a fusion between the French 'Cinderella' story and Wabanaki folktales. (...) There are a number of versions of this story but in most of them the plot is similar to the 'Cinderella' story: Oochigeas is neglected by her father and tormented by her sisters, but in the end is chosen over her sisters by the "prince" (in this case an invisible medicine person named Team, possibly even the culture hero Glooskap himself in disguise) and becomes his wife. As is typical of Wabanaki folktales, Oochigeas must pass several tests of her character in order to achieve her objective, demonstrating her courage, honesty, and respect."
It feels fitting that such a flower, with its muted tones and layered beauty, would carry the name of a heroine who embodies quiet strength, resilience, and grace.
My 2025 splurge, we likely won't offer her again next season.
Every year, I share a portion of our wholesale peony order. These are exceptional quality roots supplied by Groot & Groot, family-owned and premier grower of cut peonies and peony roots. G&G produces cut peonies in the Netherlands, Italy and South Africa. These are all large roots, at least 3–5 eye. We are proud to be able to offer these beautiful roots to cut flower growers! I aim to bring in gorgeous peonies at a variety or price points (some forever favorites and others that are exceptional and still in limited quantities). Some varieties will not be available every year, as they are simply what I am adding to our farm for that particular season :)
