Viola x wittrockiana

A stunning antique mix of pastel and rose shades. Vigorous, healthy plants are smothered in mildly-fragrant blooms. Blooms are edible and highly prized in the culinary world, both as a garnish and for candying. In Johnny's trials, Imperial Antique Shades was taller than Nature Antique Shades, so I thought we'd give them a whirl!

How to Grow

Sow indoors 7–9 weeks before transplanting out. Cover lightly. Will tolerate a light frost. 

On cut-flower production, from Johnny's: suitable for cut flowers under the following conditions; grown from a very early spring planting or an overwintered planting so that well-established plants are coming into flower during the long days and warm temperature of spring and early summer. Long days and warm temperature cause the elongation of stems and profuse flowering that is required for quality cut flower viola.

Harvest & Vase Life

Cut flowers: Harvest when stems are long and at least one bloom per stem is open. Edible flowers: Harvest when fully open. Deadheading encourages continuous blooms.
Expected vase life: 5–7 days.

Hybrid Seeds (Never GMO)

Please note that hybrid varieties are produced by traditional breeding methods of two distinct OP (open-pollinated) varieties within the same species. This is done for improved qualities, but saved seeds will not produce true to seed. While I tend to prefer most OP varieties, there are some exceptions in which a hybrid is a real winner (like my favorite cherry tomato, Sungold).

It's important to note that this is entirely different from genetic modification. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have DNA (sometimes from non-plant organisms) inserted into their genome via genetic engineering techniques.

From Johnny's: F1 Hybrid seeds are the result of a cross between two genetically distinct parent plant lines. The plants grown from these seeds will usually show more vigor than either of the two parent plants, and often more vigor and uniformity than similar non-hybrid (standard) varieties. To create a hybrid (F1), traditional breeding methods are used that involve the cross-pollination of two parent varieties that were selected for specific traits.
